Is Laughing Gas Safe?

Laughing gas, known as nitrous oxide, is one of the safest sedation techniques available in the world. In order to ensure the patient’s safety and comfort, at Advanced Dental – Scarsdale, laughing gas is the ideal solution for those patient’s experience any kind of anxiety when undergoing dental procedures.

How does Laughing Gas affect patients?

When the patient undergoes sedation, a mask is placed over their nose as a way for the gas to enter. As the name suggests, laughing gas is a simple, colorless gas. The gas is often sweet-smelling and the effects are often felt within minutes of inhaling the gas. After inhaling the gas, the patient will begin to feel a pleasant level of sedation, or an overwhelming feeling of relaxation. The patient’s cheeks and gums will usually begin to feel numb.

Shortly after the oral surgery is done, the mask is removed from the patient’s nose. A few minutes after inhaling oxygen, the effects of the laughing gas are usually reversed. Unlike those who undergo other sedation techniques such as general anesthesia, patients who are put under laughing gas can usually leave the office by themselves after their surgery without an escort.

What if I'm very sensitive to sedation?

Almost everyone is able to have the laughing gas treatment during their oral surgery, as each does of laughing gas is made separately to fit each patient. The patient will be free to relax during their procedure with absolutely no worry as our specialists give them their perfect smile.

What should I know before using laughing Gas?

Before getting the laughing gas treatment, the patient should ideally not eat anything for 2 hours prior to their treatment. In higher doses, laughing gas has been known to cause nausea in certain patients. However, higher doses are not commonly used in patients. Those patients with blocked nasal passages or suffer from claustrophobia are not able to use the laughing gas treatment.
