The block bone graft is a surgical procedure highly similar to the regular bone grafting procedure, although it does not involve the same form of artificial bone. At Advanced Dental – Scarsdale, our professional oral surgeons offer both forms of bone grafting, depending on the needs of our patient. Both procedures are meant to restore any fracturing or missing pieces of bone in the jaw area.
While the regular bone grafting procedure involves a powder form of artificial bone filling in the missing or fractured piece of the jaw, the block bone grafting procedure is slightly different. When undergoing the block bone grafting procedure, the missing or fractured jaw bone is filled in using a piece of artificial bone which already fits the shape of the jaw. By undergoing several tests, the artificial piece of bone is able to custom made to the patient’s jaw allowing for a comfortable and natural fit.

Block Bone Grafting:
Similar to the regular bone grafting procedure, you will be given the recommended antibiotics, pain medication, and an antibacterial mouthwash after the block bone grafting procedure. Your oral surgeon at Advanced Dental – Scarsdale will also advise you to avoid eating certain foods and putting any kind of pressure on the unhealed bone graft. After the initial procedure, the block bone graft must have time to heal before the implant is placed.
After the block bone graft is healed and fused with the existing jaw bone, you will need to schedule an appointment at Advanced Dental – Scarsdale in order to have the implant placed. However, similar to the regular bone grafting procedure the block bone graft may take over three months to heal.
